Black Oxfords

Struggling with the latest footwear trends? Great - ignore them, and invest in some good black leather shoes.

It can be difficult to know where you are with shoes, these days. Brogues can be studded, hi-tops can have wings and Prada wedges can turn even the soberest of shoes into multi-story fashion happenings.

There's a time and a place for all of these things, but at the same time, it's reassuring to remember that you still can't go wrong with a classic pair of black leather shoes.

Here's Esquire's edit of three of the best.

1 The Affordable Option

If you've got a new job starting soon and want to look good on a budget then these shoes (Office, £69.99) are perfect. The problem with most affordable shoes is that they tend to go down the chisel toed estate agent route of things, something this shoe avoids with aplomb. And, as far as emergency options go, they're much better than turning up in boat shoes.

2 The Contemporary Option

As with most menswear, what makes a black shoe contemporary is a matter of inches rather than miles. Mr Hare's 'Miller' oxford (Mr Porter, £425) is just a little slimmer and sleeker than most oxfords, which makes the world of difference in the footwear world. What it means for you is that you'll stand out in the best way possible to shoe connoisseurs (read: women judging whether you're worth fancying).

3 The Classic Option

There's not much that can be said about Church's shoes at this point. The Northampton based shoemaker still make their shoes in England and are our go-to shoe if we have any sort of classic shoe needs. These oxfords (Herring Shoes, £320) will get you noticed by all the right people. And by the right people we mean your boss, who'll probably have the same shoes on.
