The Guitar Hero series may be winning the battle of the virtual bands (with more than 25 million copies to its name, it has sold more than twice the number of games as rival Rock Band), but as the adage goes, it's not the battle that matters but the war, and Electronic Arts' music sim may yet gain vital ground when The Beatles: Rock Band launches its global offensive in the autumn.

If the trailer is anything to go by this is not your average profit-driven franchise extension, but rather an imaginatively choreographed homage to the Fab Four's career, complete with 45 original Beatles songs (with further hits promised via download), some suitably psychedelic visuals, and many of the venues toured by the band - from New York's Shea Stadium to the rooftop of Apple Corps' London headquarters.

Wannabe George Harrisons can even purchase a mock-up of his original Gretsch Duo Jet Guitar, on which to enthusiastically strum along to the likes of "Here Comes the Sun"
