It's warm, you've seen other people doing it, you fancy giving it a go.

But going sockless is not as easy as it looks.

Here's a few pointers to bear in mind before you get involved.

***

1 | Keep your hems close
Or specifically, with a circumference of no less than 13 and no greater than 15 inches. Though this time last year Kim Jones was sending models wearing super wide-hemmed, baggy trousers and no socks down the runway at the Louis Vuitton show, there are very few of us who can actually pull that look off. Thus, keep things skinny and, in turn, failsafe.

2 | Don't pull out the carrots
The carrot cut (saggy around the bottom and super skinny at the cuffs) was faintly ridiculous when it first appeared. Now, they just make wearers look like medieval peasants whose britches have fallen down. The elasticated / skinny cuffs may seem like they lend themselves to bare ankles but they don't. Bin 'em.

3 | Take inspiration from the Italians
The trouser to opt for is a slim cut chino – Cos do a great line for £59 – that sits close around the buttocks, slim around the thigh and calf with a slight kick at the hem. It's a shape favoured by stylish men in Milan. The base of the trouser should sit around two inches from the rim of your shoe, exposing the start of the ankle, any higher and you're wearing pedal pushers.

4 | Choose the right shoes
The perfect shoe for going sockless is a loafer. Louche by look and by name, the summer style looks the business teamed with a bronzed ankle and a slightly cropped trouser. For the office wear a pair of thin-soled derbies, at the weekend opt for a penny or horsebit loafer and when on holiday the only choice is a driving shoe (like these by Tod's) or a suede espadrille.

5 | Slap on some tan
There is nothing worse than the sight of a white, hairy kankle being squeezed out of a skinny trouser and into a too-small shoe. Before you go sockless give your legs a good scrub with an intense exfoliator and – assuming you're not able to do it naturally – drip a bit of subtle fake tan into your regular body moisturiser. Et voila. We recommend Super Soin Self-Tanning Hydrating Body Care by Sisley, £72.

6 | Don't actually go sockless
There's nothing worse than that sweaty, squelchy sensation that comes from a day of walking around with your bare-feet in a pair of leather shoes (and the smell's pretty rough too). The solution? The invisible sock. German brand Falke does a great line in these. Get yourself a pair. Or three.

7 | Invest in some accessories
If you're planning on a sock-free summer, you might want to get invest in some products as back-up. An unvarnished cedar shoe tree, properly inserted, will soak up sweat persiperation, help prevent bacterial growth and deodorise shoes. A foot antiperspirant such as Scholl Deo-Activ Foot Spray will also help get fight any unsavoury issues at source.
