Exciting / envy-inducing news from the Phillips Hong Kong Watch Auction, where after a tense 30 minute bidding war one unnamed gazillionaire walked off with a rose gold Patek Philippe.

The price? A cool HK$19,720,000 – or £1,756,911 in Her Majesty's currency.

So what's so special about the Patek Philippe reference 2499? Well aside from looking the business and – y'know – being made by Patek Philippe, the timepiece is extremely rare.

The model was in production between 1951 and 1988, a period that yielded only 349 (Eric Clapton has one of them) of which a tiny amount again were made of rose gold. In fact, only five watches that resemble the 2499 are known in the world, making this a very special piece of horology indeed.
