The watch of choice for the likes of Steve McQueen, who made it his go-to both on screen and irl, the Rolex Submariner is one of the iconic timepieces for both big-time collectors and window-shoppers alike.
And now, the most expensive version EVER has been sold.
During its recent "A Rolex Afternoon" (our kind of afternoon) sale in Geneva, Christie's sold a ridiculously rare white gold Rolex Submariner for $628,572 USD (£485,571.87, which is a lot of avocado on toast) — making it the most expensive Submariner ever sold to the public.
Listed as one of three known to exist (one with a black dial and two with blue dials,) this particular Submariner is actually a prototype from the Seventies and had been with the same private collector for more than thirty years.
While £485,000 is on the costly side, it's got some way to go to match the cost of the most expensive watch of any kind sold: a totally unique Patek Phillippe pocket watch- custom made in 1933 for New York banker Henry Graves - that fetched £18.5million at auction back in 2014.
Now that's big time.
