Czech architect Jan Kaplický, who died earlier this year aged 71, was the modernist behind some of Britain's most unusual buildings including the media centre at Lord's cricket ground and the Selfridges store in Birmingham. A Design Museum exhibition showcasing his work starts today.
"Where is it written that buildings have to be boxes," Kaplicky once said in an interview, "people aren't boxes". His organic, curvy style didn't always go down well with the establishment - Prince Charles once describing his work as a "surrealist picnic" of "vegetable-shaped buildings". He was also a prodigious designer of concepts as diverse as electric cars and bikinis. The exhibition runs until September 12. Design Museum, Shad Thames, London SE1 2YD (020 7403 6933)
