We admit to being a little choosy about our vodka. Snow Queen and Grey Goose continue to be the main contenders in the style and taste stakes, but some new pretenders from around the world are starting to gain ground. 

Akvinta Spearheading vodka making in the Mediterranean, this Croation spirit is superb - triple distilled, filtered through materials including gold and platinum, it has a smooth, wheaty taste. £35 at Harrods (+44 20 7730 1234 www.harrods.com)

Ketel One One of the few vodkas to be produced in a copper pot still (a labour-intensive process that gives each batch its own character), this Dutch spirit is silky and fresh, for the perfect martini. £30 at

Wyborowa Fans of this Polish brand (est 1823) say that chilled and neat is the best way to enjoy it, though we found it was good in a V&T. Made from rye, it’s an excellent step into the high-end market. £16 at The Drink Shop (as before)
