Dress watches must display elegance and simplicity – a slim case, uncluttered dial and refined lugs are key. A date window and second hand is acceptable, but anything more moves out of dress watch territory and into more complex, showy terrain. The strap should be leather, ideally crocodile or alligator, as metal bracelets are for day watches only.
Designed to complement black-tie evening wear, dress watches now display nobility and taste, and can be worn with a tuxedo as easily as with a work suit.
And, given their relative mechanical simplicity, they are often surprisingly affordable. These five are our current favourites.
