“I’m here because I’m Black,” Jerrod Carmichael, host of the 80th Golden Globes, quipped upon opening the ceremony on Tuesday night at The Beverly Hilton. It was a reference to the 2021 race-relations scandal of the Globes (including the Hollywood Foreign Press not having a single Black member) and the fact that the ceremony was effectively cancelled last year, and it wasn't the only well-deserved dig that the comedian had in store for the antiquated awards show.

Post-pandemic, there was a wealth of film and television to celebrate again. The most successful films of the night were The Banshees of Inisherin, which took home three awards, including best musical/comedy picture, best screenplay for Martin McDonagh and best actor for Colin Farrell. Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans also was lauded, and won best picture, while Spielberg picked up best director. There were also nods for Everything Everywhere All At Once – both leads Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan went home winners – while actors Angela Bassett, Austin Butler and Cate Blanchett were also presented with awards.

Over in TV, no one could argue that it wasn’t Jennifer Coolidge’s night. In an impassioned and hilarious speech she picked up best actress in a supporting role, and shouted out Mike White (The White Lotus creator, who also won best limited television series ) for believing in her: “Even if this is the end, you changed my life in a million different ways”.

The comedy Abbott Elementary was also another success story of the night with three gongs, including wins for Quinta Brunson and Tyler James Williams, while Amanda Seyfried won best actress for portraying Elizabeth Holmes in The Drop Out. Kevin Coster was awarded with best actor for Yellowstone and The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White was also celebrated, and fighting off tough opposition in a strong category was Zendaya, who won best actress for Euphoria.
