By Despite being very, very good, Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim Vs The World didn't make much money at the box office on release 10 years ago. It's still got hardcore devotees and a bit more wider appreciation now, but where were you a decade ago when Scott Pilgrim needed you?
It turns out that there might still be a chance for Scott Pilgrim to get its proper dues. Wright has told Entertainment Weekly that he's talked to Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O'Malley and the film's executive producer Jared LeBoff about getting a new version of the story on screen.
"There’s some plans — and there’s nothing official yet — but there are some plans to revisit the material in an animation way. We’ve been talking with Bryan and with Jared for a while [about]: What if we did something with the books in anime form? It’s being discussed as we speak."
Things are clearly at a very, very early stage at the moment, but given how merrily Wright's film sprang between arcade game graphics, animé styled fight scenes and peppily cartoonish gags, it would make total sense to go the whole hog and turn it into a fully animated series. With six years of comics to go at, there's a wealth of material to dig into as well. More than anything, it feels like the world's finally caught up to what Scott Pilgrim was trying to do in the first place.
