Cometh the hour, come the overconfident man wearing technical gear. By that we mean Adrien Brody's triumphant entrance into Succession this week, wearing a panic-attack inducing number of layers.

Brody plays billionaire investor Josh Aaronson, a four per cent Waystar Royco shareholder who Logan and Kendall are forced to break bread with in order to keep sweet. Father and son arrive at his beachside compound and are greeted by the beanie-clad billionaire reading Dostoevsky’s Crime & Punishment and wearing enough Gorpcore essentials to kit out an Arctic expedition.

Indoors we see Brody in a t-shirt under a shirt under a cardigan under a hoodie, but when he braves the elements he also adds a gilet, a scarf and a beanie into the mix. Is he fearful he might forget how to get back into his glass box of a home and be stuck outside for the entire winter?

"[The costume department] had some initial musings about him being into foraging, and I loved that he was a much more present and youthful guy, in the sense that he’s very connected with the environment," Brody told Variety of his character's costume. "He’s happy to wear a beanie, but it’s not just a fashion statement. He’s prepared for inclement weather in a way that they’re not prepared for and wouldn’t be prepared for, even if they knew they were going to go on a hike. He’s in his element, and I wanted that to be immediately tangible.

Aaronson's maximalist layering goes beyond the "contemporary business-casual costume", as Troy Patterson called it in The New Yorker in 2018, of Wall Street's Patagonia and Arc'teryx fixation. No, this man is literally drowning in outerwear to make the point that he hiked 7 miles to forage nettles for his probiotic breakfast shake this morning, battling a skin temperature of 140 Fahrenheit. Has there ever been a better illustration of toxic masculinity than enduring 16 layers of clothing in order to teach an old man a lesson about real stamina?
