In the run up to the final (fifth or third series, depending on where you joined the drama) of Top Boy, the creators built much of the promo upon the enticing tagline: “No loose ends”.

The entire six-episode season dropped on Netflix on 7 September, and the story has now arrived at its conclusion — with a shocking finale full of twists and turns, naturally. But, as annoyed fans are pointing out in their droves on social media, there are actually quite a few "loose ends" in the aftermath, particularly the final scene with that ambiguous ending.

On Instagram, one person wrote: “Caption [says] no loose ends…finishes on a cliffhanger [laughing crying emoji]. Disappointing season.” Over on Twitter, it was a similar story, with people complaining: “Top Boy said no loose ends and left bare ends loose…” and “‘No loose ends’ TOP BOY U LIED TO ME I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS”:

So, without further ado, here are some of the questions that still need answering?

What happened to Lizzie, Lithe and all Dushane’s money?

When did this plan to flee the country with millions start and where did they end up? And did Sully lose all his money too, as he also used Lithe to open a trust fund for his daughter, Tash.

Was Irish Lizzie somehow connected to Tadgh and Johnny, the Irish gangsters?

Was there a link here, or just two more random Irish drug lords introduced and then killed off for no reason?

What was wrong with Dushane?

Was he suffering from panic attacks or an actual heart issue? We’ll never know, so why spend so much time focusing on this ailment?

Why did we never see Aaron, Jamie’s brother, again?

Would he really have left Stefan, his only surviving family member, to go into care so he could go to university?

Where was Tia and Tish?

Tia may have been involved in a tip off to Sully that led to Jamie’s death, but she was absent for this series. Same for Tish, Shelley’s daughter who was mentioned, but never seen on screen again.

What happened to those spy cops in series two?

It looked like Top Boy was going to go full Line Of Duty at one point, with undercover cops pretending to be drug addicts on the estate and infiltrating the drugs ring, but… nope! Never mentioned again!

And of course, who shot Sully?

OK, so the writers went for a Sopranos-esque ambiguous ending of a shot being fired at point blank range at Sully’s head while in his car, but the audience did not see who did it. This is the very antithesis of tying up loose ends, and one that no amount of freeze-framing the shot on TV will solve.

Still, maybe this all means there’s still scope for that Top Girl Jaq spin-off a little further down the line.
