Close your eyes and imagine the James Bond gun barrel sequence. Chances are you’re picturing 007 in black tie. But what if we were to tell you that Daniel Craig has never worn a tuxedo in any of his intros? You’d feel like a right fool, and deservedly so.
You can open your eyes now. Much like Sean Connery before him (whose stunt double wore a business suit and trilby hat), the Skyfall actor has never introduced a bowtie to his barrel wardrobe. He wore an open-necked shirt for his debut in 2006's Casino Royale, to really push home the point that this was a departure from the Brosnan years, and has been wearing business suits ever since.
So fans were understandably surprised to see Daniel Craig decked out in black tie during Saturday Night Live’s James Bond gun barrel spoof over the weekend. The 52-year-old was on hosting duties, and he poked fun at 007 in a number of skits.
Some fans have speculated that he'll pull on a tuxedo for No Time To Die, which he once again confirmed would be his last outing as Bond. "This next James Bond film is going to be my last," he said. "But it's going to be one of the best. Because we got Phoebe Waller-Bridge from Fleabag come to help with some of the dialogue," he said in his opening monologue.
Craig added: "It's not going to be that different. Every so often I will turn to the camera and I will say, 'The name's Bond, James Bond. Is it bad that I fancy the Pope?'"
So will Bond pull on a tuxedo? And would that point towards a more classic reimagining of the character post-Craig? We've got a while until we find out. Originally scheduled for release in April, fears around the Coronavirus have resulted in it being pushed back to 12 November in the UK.
