Daniel Craig's creative influence over the Bond franchise cannot be overstated, from casting to suit cuts to scriptwriting (he recruited Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and basically rewrote Quantum of Solace on-set). With all that in mind, you’d think that some delegation would be in order.
Well, as ever, you would be dead wrong (you moron). Because according to Billie Eilish and her songwriting sibling Finneas O’Connell, the long-standing 007 star even has final say over the Bond soundtrack.
In an interview with BBC Breakfast, O'Connell revealed that the pair were left on tenterhooks as they waited on Craig's approval their theme song, 'No Time to Die'. "He had to like it. If Daniel doesn't like it, then you don't get the job".
Eilish added: "He has a big say in it. We learned that from this. He's really involved. We haven't met him but he's got to like it before they move on."
When she was told that it had been chosen, the 18-year-old’s first reaction was: "Oh my God, I'm gonna pee myself."
All of which leads us to to think that you could probably game the system by appealing to Daniel Craig's musical tastes from the off. A cursory Google search informs us that his favourite band is Radiohead (who lost out to Sam Smith on Spectre), and a Daily Star article from 2017 rather flimsily suggests that he originally wanted Car Seat Headrest to soundtrack No Time to Die.
In any case, Billie Eilish triumphed – and now she's set to perform it live for the first time at the Brits, which she admits to being "so scared" about.
"We've never performed it ever, so it feels so weird that it's in the public, especially now that I'm performing it and I'm hitting a note I've never hit before,"
"We've been wanting to make a Bond song for years. I remember at the beginning of last year we told our whole team that if any Bond things come up we want to be involved if we can possibly be."
Her brother added: "There are few things as desirable as doing a Bond song and we didn't take the opportunity lightly. We really just tried to work as hard as we could to prove ourselves worthy of that."
