We'll admit that, when we first saw Harry Styles' name on the cast-list for Dunkirk, we were sceptical. That Harry Styles? The floppy-haired heart-melter? The tattoo-covered Prince emulator? The tween heartthrob whose only acting credits were in an episode of iCarly, in which he played himself? What the hell was Christopher Nolan thinking?
Well, it turned out Christopher Nolan was thinking his wide-eyed boyishness was perfect for a young soldier caught between an advancing enemy and the deep blue sea. He may not have had many lines in Dunkirk, but Styles proved that he could genuinely Act. Shows what we know.
Which is perhaps why the internet was so quick to believe rumours that circulated a couple of weeks ago that he'd been cast opposite Brad Pitt in what presumably would have been the thirstiest movie ever made, but which sadly turned out to be just the unfulfilled dream of every woman under 50. Ah well.
This week, however, Styles has proved that he's all-in on this acting thing, with lead roles announced in Olivia Wilde's Don't Worry, Darling (he stepped in to fill Shia LaBeouf's vacated Uggs) and, now, opposite Lily James in LGBTQ+ romance My Policeman, which is being adapted from the Bethan Roberts novel. It centres on a heterosexual couple who take in an elderly lodger, with whom the younger man (that'll be Styles) engages in a torrid love affair. With James presumably playing his wife, it's anyone's guess who'll be cast as the lodger. Anyone know what Brad's up to?
