Lady Gaga and Adam Driver plotting murder decked out in Gucci, could there be a combination of elements more likely to send the internet into meltdown? And melt it has, ever since a photo of the stars shooting Ridley Scott's forthcoming House of Gucci surfaced and everyone lost their minds for two straight days.
The image was the first shot to emerge from Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci, which will tell the story of the late Maurizio Gucci (Driver), the head of the Gucci fashion house, and his ex-wife, Italian socialite Patrizia Reggiani (Gaga), who hired a hitman to kill him in 1995. It’s based on the 2001 book House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed by Sara Gay Forden, which certainly promises a lot.
Here’s what we know about it so far:
House of Gucci trailer
The first trailer has dropped, offering two minutes packed with betrayal and resentment, all set to the backdrop of European glamour and the soundtrack of Blondie's Heart of Glass. The fast-paced montage has it all: Adam Driver sporting a power polo-neck, Gaga furiously announcing, as she crosses herself spiritually, "Father, Son, House of Gucci". The accents might range from anywhere between Bologna and Bergen, but there's Jared Leto in a fat suit, tiny espresso cups being stirred with tiny spoons, and so much malice that frankly an Australian accent could infiltrate and we'd still be rubbing our hands with glee.
There is something enjoyably Bond about the mixture of Europe's cafes and alpine hotspots which the characters flit through in exquisite tailoring. Something 007 about betrayal at the hands of the woman you love, the dark ending we know the film is plummeting towards. We have had to wait forever to discover who will be the next James Bond after Daniel Craig hands over the keys to the DB5, but overnight it feels like Adam Driver has quietly made the case for himself as the man for the job.
House of Gucci: Director and Cast
Ridley Scott, who originally wanted to take on the book back in 2006, came back on board to direct in November 2019, working alongside The Last Man in Brooklyn screenwriter Roberto Bentivegna.
By that point Lady Gaga, fresh from her celebrated role in A Star Is Born, signed on as Patrizia. Then came Adam Driver as Maurizio, alongside the rest of the family: Al Pacino as Aldo Gucci, the son of the brand’s founder, as well as his son Paolo, played by an unrecognisable Jared Leto. British actor Jeremy Irons (replacing Robert De Niro) plays actor and entrepreneur Rodolfo Gucci, while Jack Huston fulfils the role of Domenico De Sole, former president and CEO of Gucci Group.
To provide more background on these Gucci family members would most likely give too much of the plot away, but we can treat you to some exquisite behind-the-scenes shots of the film from earlier this year. Bouncy hair, flaky pastries and an endless array of lovely Gucci threads, as you'd expect.
What is the House of Gucci plot?
Before she worked on the book, American author Sara Gay Forden covered the Italian fashion industry from Milan for more than 15 years.
It gave her a close insight into the tragedy that befell the Gucci dynasty in the Nineties, when former Gucci head Maurizio, the last of the family to lead the company, was gunned down outside of his office building in 1995.
Three years after his death a court found his ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani Martinelli, who Maurizio had left for a younger woman in 1985, guilty of hiring a hitman for the job. The film itself will delve into their 12-year marriage and the acrimonious fallout that emerged from it, as well the infighting that occurred within the Gucci family itself.
When is House of Gucci out?
The film is set for release in America on 24 November 2021, and slated for release in the UK two days later on 26 November 2021.
