Thanks to the slicing open of Tauntauns and exploding of Ewoks, the Star Wars films might not be known for its (fictional) animal rights, but at least now one of the franchise's biggest stars wants to make amends.

If you'll recall in 1980's Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, there's a scene in the film when Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) comes face to face with a ravenous Wampa, and the Jedi apprentice wastes no time in defending himself against the attacking ice creature.

However, when one Star Wars fan reminded Hamill about the scene with a severed Wampa arm cake for #NationalCakeDay, the actor defended himself by saying that Luke would never be so violent, and added that he was told something completely different would happen in the movie when he filmed the scene.

"When filming scene I was assured my lightsaber swipe toward camera (creature not on set) would simply singe fur 2 scare him off," he wrote.

"Horrified to later see amputation & unnecessary cruelty-Wampa was HUNGRY (not EVIL)-Luke would never do this! #StillAngry2017."

Of course, over 30 years on and now that the lesson's been learned with Skywalker, you can't imagine that a family-friendly film would get away with actions like this nowadays.

Unless you're Chewbacca in The Last Jedi and you're trying to fly the Millennium Falcon but a Porg gets in your way.

Let's just hope that no (other) Star Wars creatures were harmed during the making of The Last Jedi then...

Although, you have to hand it to the Twitter user who posted the picture of the cake that started this debate off – that is one fine looking Wampa arm.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in UK cinemas on 14 December and in the US on 15 December.
