Actress Olivia Wilde has confirmed that is is making her first foray into feature film directing with new film Booksmart.

She announced the news with an image of a director's chair on her Instagram account: "On this #femalefilmmakerfriday I’m beyond thrilled to announce that I’m directing a movie called "Booksmart" for @annapurnapics and Gloria Sanchez Productions, starring BRILLIANT humans, @beaniefeldstein and @kaitlyndever."

Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein take the lead roles, as "two academic superstars and best friends (who) suddenly realise that they should have worked less and played more. Determined never to fall short of their peers, the girls set out on a mission to cram four years of fun into one night," Variety reports.

Feldstein - who stars in awards-favourite Lady Bird - shared the news to her own Instagram account with the comment, "so excited to work with these brilliant women!!!"

Wilde has previously directed music videos for Red Hot Chili Peppers and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. She has extensive acting credits, including films Rush and Drinking Buddies, and television series Vinyl and House.
