Work has reportedly started on the next game in the Grand Theft Auto series.

Preliminary work for GTA 6 is under way according to TechRadar, which also said that Rockstar once scrapped plans to set a Grand Theft Auto game in Tokyo.

Unfortunately, however, there's still no word on where the new game will be set, although if the Tokyo report is anything to go by, it's unlikely to take place outside of the USA. Rockstar is said to have found the Tokyo road system problematic, and would have also had to change series staples like cars and brands. The company previously trademarked GTA: Bogota and Grand Theft Auto: Sin City, so maybe there's a clue there.

While Rockstar decides on a setting for GTA 6, the company is believed to be working on a sequel to Red Dead Redemption, which could be unveiled this year. Back in 2012, Red Dead Redemption developer Rockstar San Diego listed openings for a gameplay programmer and network programmer specifically for an upcoming open-world title.

The company was seeking gameplay programmers who were "ready for the challenges posed by large-scale open worlds with complex AI and physics". The advertisement also said that "knowledge of animation, camera, AI and physics problems and solutions gain bonus points".

In the meantime, fans are waiting patiently for Red Dead Redemption to join the ranks of backwards compatible games on Xbox One.
