By If great artists are never truly content with their work, then we should take director Quentin Tarantino's relentless tinkering with his back catalogue as a sign he's a very great artist indeed.
Last month the director revealed in an interview that he's made a 200 minute directors cut of his 2012 film Django Unchained, a month after his 2015 film The Hateful Eight hit Netflix as a four part mini-series.
Back in 2014 the auteur started work a comic book sequel of Django Unchained which saw the eponymous character leave his wife Broomhilda at their new home near Chicago and hit the road again. There he comes across Diego de la Vega – otherwise known as Zorro – who he joins on a mission to free local indigenous people from slavery while serving as his bodyguard.
Now Collider have revealed that Tarantino is working with scriptwriter Jerrod Carmichael to write a screenplay based on the comic book idea.
They report, "Word of the project first surfaced in the wake of the 2014 Sony hack, which revealed several email exchanges between Tarantino and then-Sony boss Amy Pascal. One email from Tarantino read, “D/Z could be really fun!” and Pascal described the series as “super cool.” Since then, Collider has heard from multiple sources that the film adaptation is real and that Carmichael is working on the script, though they differ on whether he’s writing it on his own with oversight from Tarantino, or co-writing with Quentin himself as well as another, as-yet-unidentified writer."
Tarantino is currently earning high praise for his latest film Once Upon A Time ... In Hollywood, called, by this very magazine, "a Shakespearian masterpiece" and "his strongest, greatest, most-moving (!) film in years". The DiCaprio, Pitt and Robbie-fronted ode to the end of the Golden Age of Hollywood is the ninth and supposedly penultimate film for the director who has sworn to retire after directing ten films.
As he ordinarily pens the scripts for the films he makes, it's unlikely that the Django/Zorro crossover will be his final directorial flourish. Instead he may well pass the baton to another director, though there's no details on who yet.
Other forthcomings projects from the brain of Tarantino include an in-progress longer mash-up of Kill Bill and Kill Bill 2, so even after film 10 there's likely still plenty of QT Universe content coming.
