Legions of Star Wars fans around the world cried out in joy and were suddenly silenced when they were fooled into thinking Jar Jar Binks was going to be making his grand return to the franchise.

The popular Gungan hero from the much-loved prequel trilogy didn't appear in The Force Awakens, because JJ Abrams was too busy pandering to fans of the older films.

A Twitter account called @VarietyFilm posted, "Jar Jar Binks to return to the Star Wars franchise in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Lucasfilm has revealed", but – unfortunately – the scoop was a hoax, the account was a parody, and the link was... well, you can find out that one for yourself:

The account played a similar prank recently when it 'announced' that Joss Whedon would be directing a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie, but no one got their hopes up for that one in the first place, unlike the possible return of Jar Jar.

Fans have previously come up with an elaborate theory that Jar Jar was secretly a Sith Lord (Rule of Two be damned), and it became so popular that even Liam Neeson joked he was making an unofficial movie about it.

Sadly, actor Ahmed Best said he wouldn't return as Jar Jar for another film, crushing our hopes and dreams. Best did voice the iconic character in a few episodes of The Clone Wars, including (the best) one where he fools the Separatists into thinking he is a Jedi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi releases in cinemas on 15 December but really, without Jar Jar in it, why even bother?
