Steven Spielberg has finally entered the world of superheroes, signing on to bring DC Comics' Blackhawk to the big screen.
The iconic director is teaming with Warner Bros. to produce a Blackhawk movie, with the intent to direct, DC confirms.
First appearing in 1941, Blackhawk is a comic book series following a team of World War II fighter pilots, the Blackhawk Squadron, led by a mysterious man known as Blackhawk.
The series was immensely popular in the early 1940s and is remembered for the character's blue uniform and battle cry of "Hawk-a-a-a!"
The script will be written by David Koepp, who also wrote Spielberg's Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
The news comes hot off the back of Spielberg's latest film, the Easter-egg filled Ready Player One, grossing over $475 million worldwide.
In a statement, Spielberg said: "It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring Ready Player One to the screen.
"They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre. I am excited to reunite with them on Blackhawk."
Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, added: "We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg's latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure.
"We can't wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing Blackhawk to movie audiences worldwide."
While this is certainly big news for fans of DC and Spielberg, it's best not to get too excited just yet, as the director has plenty to do before he can begin work on Blackhawk.
Currently, he's working on the fifth Indiana Jones movie and then he's got the remake of West Side Story.
It's also worth pointing out that Blackhawk may well be a standalone DC movie, and not a DCEU project with connections to the Justice League films.
