It's funny to think of Harrison Ford's latest Indiana Jones film as a goodbye. The 80-year-old received a five-minute standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which many critics hailed as a proper and emotional sendoff for the character. But Ford has only ramped up his workload in recent years. He just starred in Shrinking on Apple TV+, wrapped the first season of 1923, the Yellowstone spinoff, and is about to join the Marvel universe as President Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross in Captain America: New World Order.
But after a highlight reel of Ford's work screened and director Thierry Frémaux beckoned the actor to come on stage to receive a surprise Palm d'Or Award, the waterworks began. "I’m very moved by this," Ford told the audience, per Variety. "They say when you’re about to die, you see your life flash before your eyes, and I just saw my life flash before my eyes. A great part of my life, but not all of my life. My life has been enabled by my lovely wife, who has supported my passion and my dreams, and I’m grateful." Ford arrived at the venue with his wife, Calista Flockhart, 58—with the venue reportedly announcing the couple as "Indiana Jones and Calista Flockhart." Cute. "I love you, too. But I’ve got a movie you ought to see," Ford continued. "It’s right behind me. So let me get out of the way, and thank you again for this great honour."
The actor previously revealed that this would be the last time he played Indiana Jones, and that any future projects from Disney would have to go on without his involvement. The new film uses de-ageing technology to send Ford back in time and have him knock some Nazis out once again. Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mads Mikkelsen round out the cast, with a premiere date set for June 30, 2023. Below, check out more reactions to Harrison Ford's big night:
