This past autumn, we saw lots and lots of Red. As in the Taylor Swift album. On November 12, 2021, the artist released Red (Taylor's Version), which featured a 10-minute-long version of her beloved breakup anthem, "All Too Well." Fans have long assumed that "All Too Well" details Swift's flicker of a relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal—and those same fans clamoured so loudly in Gyllenhaal's Instagram comments after the song's rerelease that he shut them off.

Until now, that was the only indication that Gyllenhaal was even aware of the song that inspired a hell of a Saturday Night Live! performance from Swift. In Esquire US's new cover story with Gyllenhaal, the actor—during a drive to upstate New York—finally addressed the situation that made for one of last year's bigger celebrity stories. “It has nothing to do with me. It’s about her relationship with her fans,” Gyllenhaal said when our writer brought up "All Too Well," adding that he hasn't even listened to the album. “It is her expression. Artists tap into personal experiences for inspiration, and I don’t begrudge anyone that.”

From there, Gyllenhaal started speaking broadly, talking about cyberbullying and public discourse in general. "At some point, I think it’s important when supporters get unruly that we feel a responsibility to have them be civil and not allow for cyberbullying in one’s name,” he said. “That begs for a deeper philosophical question. Not about any individual, per se, but a conversation that allows us to examine how we can—or should, even—take responsibility for what we put into the world, our contributions into the world. How do we provoke a conversation?"

There you go, Swifties. We hate to report that we still don't know the whereabouts of the scarf, how many dingers Gyllenhaal had on the tee-ball team, or if the man is aware that there's a Peloton ride that plays the 10-minute-long "All Too Well" in full. He just wanted us to know that he's happy. “My life is wonderful," he said. "I have a relationship that is truly wonderful, and I have a family I love so much. And this whole period of time has made me realise that.”
