David Fincher's latest film, The Killer, is finally here. The movie, which is inspired by a French graphic novel by Alexis Matz, is now streaming on Netflix. Fincher’s adaptation dials up Matz’s story into a full-on action thriller, following an assassin who unravels after a hit goes haywire. "Solitary, cold, methodical, and unencumbered by scruples or regrets, a killer waits in the shadows, watching for his next target," reads the film's synopsis. "Yet, the longer he waits, the more he thinks he’s losing his mind, if not his cool."
Fincher’s take on The Killer is a heart-racing spiral, in part due to Michael Fassbender's chilling portrayal as The Killer—but also because Fincher knows how to leave you wanting more. I won’t spoil too much, but the end of the film begs two questions. First, how did The Killer manage to cause so much destruction and come out unscathed? And, of course, will there be a sequel?
The Killer ends with a peaceful shot of The Killer and his maybe-girlfriend, Magdala (Sophie Charlotte) retreating to safety. It seems like they have a chance at a normal life, but is that really possible? With all the death and destruction in their wake, it’s only natural for another issue to arise. What about the witness? Are we supposed to believe they’ll just forgive and forget? There must be another movie in the works… right?
Unfortunately, Netflix has not announced any plans for a sequel, but that doesn’t mean The Killer’s story has come to an end. The graphic novel is part of a lengthy series, so there's plenty of material to work with. Hopefully, if The Killer performs well, we’ll see Fassbender reprise the role. In the meantime, you can watch The Killer on Netflix—and come up with your own theories about what might happen next.
