If you haven't heard, a not-so-little action film called Uncharted hit cinemas this past weekend, in which Mark Wahlberg plays a grizzled adventurer named Victor Sullivan. AKA Sully. The movie is of moderately questionable quality. But you don't need to know that! It's not why we're here today.
No, we're here because Wahlberg is press-touring about following Uncharted's release, dropping bits of Wahlbergisms like hunks of frozen ground beef on a grill at your neighborhood Wahlburgers. In an interview with KFC Radio, Wahlberg got to talking about 2006's The Departed, where he played the copper Sean Dignam. (The role nabbed Wahlberg a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Oscars, by the way.) Of course—spoiler alert for a nearly 20-year-old movie incoming—Dignam was one of the only main characters to survive the bloodshed in Martin Scorsese's film.
Perhaps understandably then, Wahlberg said, he got to thinking, along with writer Bill Monahan, that he could dream up an idea for a sequel to The Departed. "I went into a meeting with Bill Monahan at Warner Brothers to pitch the sequel to The Departed," Wahlberg said. "And let's just say the pitch didn't go very well. He really didn't have anything fleshed out, but he's the kind of guy you just trust to go and write something. And so when we were working on the script for Cocaine Cowboys, American Desperado, [I] said, 'Bill, just go write. They like to have things well thought out and planned.'"
Wahlberg later added that he had Brad Pitt and Robert De Niro in mind for the sequel. Unfortunately, he didn't go into detail about what, exactly, the plot continuation to The Departed would look like. But we think it's safe to say, it would've likely included more guns, "I'm Shipping Up to Boston (Again)," and Catholic guilt.
