We have lift off on Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One - or MIDRPO, as those of us who don’t want to wear out our keyboards over the course of the next few weeks are calling it. Which is to say, the official trailer for the eagerly awaited, cinema-saving blockbuster has dropped.

The action scenes, it goes without saying, don’t disappoint: Train crashes! Exploding submarines! That death defying parachute jump off a mountain on a motorbike! Alongside all the mega-stunts, there’s also the not-so-small matter of the mission at hand…

What’s the big idea?

Ethan Hunt (Cruise) has been reunited with his Impossible Mission Force on what’s being called his most “dangerous mission yet”. His opponent? “A terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands”, which we think has something to do with the big space-age looking computer that’s being flashed up on the screen.

“The world is changing,” one character says poignantly in the trailer, “truth is vanishing…war is coming.”

And it appears as though Ethan will be forced to confront the fact that his frankly insane day job could put those he loves at risk, as he’s asked: “Ethan, what’s your ultimate objective?”

The synopsis of the film explains further: “With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, and dark forces from Ethan's past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission - not even the lives of those he cares about most.”

Who else is in the film?

Popping up beside Mr. Cruise are Hayley Atwell and Pom Klementieff, while Simon Pegg and Henry Czerny return as Benji Dunn and Eugene Kittridge, respectively. Meanwhile, expect to see Vanessa Kirby as The White Widow, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, while other cast members include Esai Morales, Mariela Garriga, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, Frederick Schmidt, Cary Elwes, Mark Gatiss, Indira Varma and Rob Delaney.

When’s it out?

Four years in the making, it will finally hit screens on 12 July. The good news is that part deux is a mere 351 days away, landing with another bang on 28 June, 2024.

Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One is on general release on 12 July.
