By An Oscars night like no other was, in one way at least, exactly the same as all the other Oscars nights: it was ripe for a memeing. The win for My Octopus Teacher in the Best Documentary category was a triumph for anyone old enough to remember Spider-Man 2.
Congratulations to Alfred Molina and, to a slightly lesser degree, Tobey Maguire. While we're getting the congratulations in, it's worth noting that the man we in the UK first came to know as Posh Kenneth is now an Academy Award winner.
Who'll be next? Dev Patel? Jack O'Connell? Neil Morrissey?
The expected crowning of Chadwick Boseman didn't arrive, which feels like a shame, but Anthony Hopkins was at least a) a deserving winner and b) asleep when he actually won, which is a lark.
This was Hopkins' second Best Actor win, though many of us have been saying for years that he was robbed for this moving performance of a man on the edge.
The song guessing game section probably isn't one we'll want to hang onto for future years, but it did at least give us the finest moment of this year's whole shindig: Glenn Close doing Da Butt.
Don't know why that whole interlude happened, but glad it did. Meanwhile, back at home, New York senator Chuck Schumer tried to get into the mood by sitting so close to the TV he could pretend he was in the room.
Thank you, Joe, for liberating us from the tyranny of steaming hot beef beers. Elsewhere, Youn Yuh-jung's win for Best Supporting Actress in Minari met the same precedent set by Bong Joon-ho last year with Parasite.
And while The Sound of Metal may not have taken Best Picture and Best Actor escaped Riz Ahmed this time around, he's still got a fine body of work behind him.
Beautiful. And as much as everything was up in the air this year, the Oscars can't help itself from settling into the same mildly insane rhythms as it always does.
