It's been nearly two years since we last saw Tommy Shelby and the Peaky Blinders swaggering around Small Heath, after Tommy took himself off to perish in the peace and quiet of the Warwickshire countryside only to pull himself around, realise he was actually fine, and find some kind of equilibrium in not murdering his doctor.

And all that time, we've been drumming our fingers, fiddling with our flat caps and checking our pocket watches as the long-promised Peaky Blinders movie heads glacially toward us. Then again, maybe we should have expected it: sticking a bit of slow-mo on things is very much the Peaky way.

"I’m just working on the final bits of it at the moment," Knight told the Radio Times recently. "I just sit down at the keyboard and start. It’s a bit like having a dream, for me. You sit there and all this stuff comes, and then you read it back and think, 'That’s pretty good – but where did it come from?'"

From you Steve! From the same fingers which gave us Locke, and Taboo, and that one where Matthew McConaughey's trying to catch a big fish but it turns out he lives in a video game! Get some more of that stuff out of those fingers, chuck it over to the studio, and you'll be sorted.

But what else do we know about the Peaky Blinders movie? Here's everything that's been shared so far, and when you can expect to see the Shelbys on the big screen.

What is the Peaky Blinders movie called?

No idea yet. Knight's only just finishing the script as of January 2024, so it might be a little while until we get anything more solid on that front. Given that the titles of pieces of post-series Peaky ephemera have traded on Tommy's name (the ballet was The Redemption of Thomas Shelby) or been given short colon-assisted extensions (Peaky Blinders: The Rise, Peaky Blinders: Mastermind, Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom). Maybe something like Peaky Blinders: Fook That Hitler Bastard.

What will happen in the Peaky Blinders movie?

Knight has long teased the idea of a wartime Peaky movie – indeed, as far back as season five he was pitching the idea of the main series ending with the first air raid sirens of the Second World War going off in Birmingham. That didn't end up happening, but given we left the final season in 1936 it wouldn't be a massive leap to get to those sirens. Tommy might well have knocked being an MP on the head for good, though being close to Churchill might draw him into some high-level plotting.

Also, let's not forget Tommy's got a bee in his bonnet about Hitler. That doctor told Tommy he was dying; the doctor knows Hitler; ergo, Hitler tried to kill Tommy. Ipso facto. Nobody takes potshots at Tommy Shelby and lives.

Who is in the Peaky Blinders movie?

Again, no confirmation as yet, but Cillian Murphy – lately of Hollywood, California – has said repeatedly that he's bang up for it whenever it happens, and it's hard to imagine any of the other principle players saying no to one last ride with the Shelby clan into the storm of the war.

What season six did very explicitly was drop in new characters to do most of the running around, particularly Tommy's son Duke and the younger Blinders . Last year Knight promised "some new faces that will hopefully be quite surprising," which we're all simply going to have to assume will include Adolf Hitler. There was a brief and very quickly doused rumour ahead of season six that Hitler would appear in Peaky, and would be played by Rowan Atkinson. Imagine. Just imagine.

Will this be the last Peaky Blinders story?

It might well give us the end of Tommy. The story was conceived as a sweeping view of how Britain changed between the wars, and Tommy's finally managed to get a hold of his traumatic experiences in the trenches, so it feels like his arc is closing. But no more Peaky? That seems vanishingly unlikely. Indeed, Bloomberg has reported that Netflix is working on two spin-off properties: one set in mid-century Boston, after the events of the series; and one focused on the young Polly, set before Peaky.

When will the Peaky Blinders movie be released?

It's purportedly shooting from this summer, so you're looking at probably early 2025 at the very soonest.
