Sean Penn has released his debut novel, and let's just say the double-Oscar-winning actor is not impressing people as much with his new venture.

But, hey. At least it's succeeded in generating a host of hilarious social media comments:

Penn's novel is called Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff and follows a "contract killer for an off-the-books program[me] run by a branch of US intelligence that targets the elderly, the infirm and others who drain this consumption-driven society of its resources."

Despite its bestseller status, Penn's debut has been subjected to widespread criticism from reviewers and social media commentators alike since its US launch earlier this week.

Indeed, The Guardian called it "repellent and stupid on so many levels", while the New York Times went for "a riddle wrapped in an enigma and cloaked in crazy". So, it seems the super violent and politically ambivalent book hasn't worked for everyone.

Hmm, maybe the book's epilogue poem, which calls the #MeToo movement "a toddler's crusade", also rubbed people the wrong way...

In the interest of fairness, we must point out that comedian Sarah Silverman called Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff "a goddamned novel for the ages", while British novelist Sir Salman Rushdie said it "was fun to read" (interpret that how you will).

Nonetheless, the book has been thoroughly roasted by authors, critics and English-language-speakers alike on social media for its OTT alliteration and nonsensical prose.
