Cape Tribulation in Australia's Queensland is said to be David Attenborough's favourite place in the world, which makes the region of rainforest and beaches a top hitter on the lists of most backpackers travelling to the country. But one tourist recently had an experience at Cape Tribulation that she'll never, ever forget, when she was savagely attacked by a crocodile as she stood on the bank of a creek.
The Cairns Post reports the woman, a 24-year-old from the UK known only as Leah, managed to escape with a bite on her upper left leg after the saltwater crocodile attacked on Monday night. A spokesperson from the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) said the crocodile was estimated to be 2 to 2.5 metres (or somewhere between 78 and 98 inches) long.
A video of the scary incident was posted on the Facebook page of Ally Bullifent, Leah's friend.
As you can see from the footage, the croc literally attacks out of nowhere, so it's pretty fortunate the woman managed to make a speedy escape. Bullifent also posted a picture showing the damage done to her friend's leg. Several wounds from the crocodile's teeth are visible, with blood pouring from them.
And it's not the first time a crocodile has attacked a tourist abroad. Earlier this year, 24-year-old Paul McClean had been holidaying in Sri Lanka with friends when he was pulled into a river by a vicious crocodile while washing his hands in the water.
He was tragically killed by the creature.
Following this latest incident, Queensland's EHP have announced they will be carrying out overnight searches to trace the animal, which has now been deemed dangerous, and will hopefully manage to remove it.
