It's been rumoured for a long time now, but Tom Hardy has finally revealed he will take on Al Capone, the biggest gangster of them all, the upcoming biopic Fonzo.

Hardy only wrapped shooting for Venom back in January, but he has already moved onto his next role if this Instagram is anything to go by.

And judging by the synopsis, we are in for Hardy's darkest role yet - one that is sure to give Robert DeNiro's portrayal of Capone in The Untouchables a run for its money.

The film will focus on Capone's final years. After a stint in Alcatraz, Capone became increasingly disorientated and tormented by his past due to an brain infection bought on by untreated syphilis.

It's said that fellow inmates could hear Capone letting out blood curdling screams late at night for "Jimmy" to leave him alone. James "Jimmy" Clark was one of the victims from the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre, and Capone even asked after a medium to find out what Jimmy wanted from him. He continued to be tormented by his past until he died of a heart attack aged 48 in 1947.

Fonzo has been in development since 2016, with director Josh Trank attached. Filming could start as early as April and here's to hoping Hardy posts some behind-the-scenes shots on Instagram much like he did for Venom.

But until then, all we have is the full synopsis, which reads: "Once a ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist, Alfonse Capone was the most infamous and feared gangster of American lore.

"At the age of 47, following nearly a decade of imprisonment, dementia rots Alfonse's mind and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life.”
