The title for the season two finale of Euphoria, ‘All My Life, My Heart Has Yearned for a Thing I Cannot Name’, is a quote from the French writer André Breton, as recalled by Hunter S. Thompson in his book Hell's Angels. Pretentious? Well, yes, but perhaps there is a clue in invoking surrealist thinker Breton, whose most famous novel, Nadja, opens with a simple question: "Who am I?"

Euphoria is a show where everyone, young and old, gay and straight, coupled-up and single, is grappling with their identity and wondering who they really are. Now, with the climax of season two approaching, the stage is set for all these existential crisis to explode at once in fluorescent technicolour. Will Nate murder his dad in an oedipal rage? Judging by Cassie's furious march into the theatre where her sister is being cheered by a rapt audience, she might end up with blood on her hands, too. And what of Lexi and Fezco, the romance which has blossomed over furtive glances, which feel all the more adorable for their innocence against the backdrop of endless dicks swinging. After last week's 'to be continued' cliffhanger, it doesn't look exactly great for Fexi.

Our predictions? Nobody is passing their SATs at Euphoria High, amongst other things.

Cassie goes full freakout

euphoria
HBO

The whiplash change of direction that Sydney Sweeney has undergone as Cassie, from wide-eyed innocent in season one, to the puking, screaming, crying, face-rollering obsessive now before us, has been quite something to watch. Having alienated herself from everyone in pursuit of Nate, she's now lost him thanks to her sister, who is now being cheered on adoringly by the entire school. The trailer shows her giving a demonic scream and charging at what must be Lexi, while Maddy (plot twist?) attempts to restrain her and the audience laugh and film the after-show entertainment.

One more monumental meltdown and Sweeney's Emmy nomination is surely sealed. That said, if episode 8 doesn't show Cassie's slow walk back into the theatre, stiletto piercing her sister's playbill in the process, to the tune of The Imperial March, then forget it.

Fez is hurt, but isn't the one to die

euphoria
HBO

Surely HBO wouldn't take the pure heart of Lexi Howard and crush it right before our eyes, only moments after exposing every vulnerability she has ever felt via a play of her life? We're talking about the broadcaster of The Red Wedding here, so don't count on it. In truth, Euphoria is overdue a death and the sheer number of symbols and clues related to death in this season have to be leading us somewhere. What's interesting is that the preview trailer shows Fezco hammering on a door to be let in, perhaps suggesting Ashtray has yet again rushed in to defend him. Yet judging by the shot of Fez on the floor in pain, holding a card which reads 'Lexi' to his chest like a true Romeo, he may now be finally returning the favour in trying to protect Ash back, but will it be too late? The Euphoria trailers like to manipulate things – just remember the one from a few episodes back that made it look like Rue had died – so don't count on an RIP Fez party just yet.

Nate reports his dad to the police

euphoria
HBO

The blink-and-you-miss-it SWAT team running into a building at first feels like it must be related to the violence going down at Fez's house, but on second viewing the shot of Nate standing by a door with police lights glaring around him feels too ominous to ignore. Has Nate finally enacted revenge on his father and shared the recordings of him having sex with teenagers with the cops? Or is Nate, who Fez glassed at the beginning of this season and also threatened to kill, tied up with that episode of violence?

A Jules Rue-union

euphoria
HBO

There's no sign of Rules in the trailer for the finale, but the longing glances exchanged between the two of them in the penultimate episode suggest that romance isn't over yet. What we do see is a shot of Elliott on his bed from afar, reminding us him and his love triangle is still in this story, too. Remember, Rue still hasn't found out about Jules and Elliott sleeping together, which is even more fuel for the fire of the finale.

Ethan for Broadway?

Just saying.
