Remember all that talk of an Inbetweeners reboot, without the original cast or writers?

We weren't happy about the rumours – and nor, it turns out, were the team behind the hugely popular comedy.

Back in March, it was revealed that production company Banijay UK was plotting to revive the show with new actors – but speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Inbetweeners co-creator Damon Beesley said any reboot "would feel wrong".

"The Inbetweeners is about those characters, it's not really a brand," he said. "It's the opposite of a brand - it was a small E4 show."

Beesley suggested that any Inbetweeners revamp would face the same hostile reaction as the short-lived US remake, which was savaged by critics and swiftly axed in 2012.

"The audience almost revolted over the idea of the American one," he said. "They didn't really give it a chance, just because it wasn't the original.

"So I can't imagine that people who like The Inbetweeners will feel any differently if you wrote a new one without any of the original people. Comedy is all about voices. You can't just go, 'Oh I know, we'll do Alan Partridge, but we won't have Steve Coogan or Armando Iannucci involved!'"

Joe Thomas, who played awkward Simon, agreed with Beesley, arguing that The Inbetweeners was all "about the personalities".

"I would find it hard to conceive of a Peep Show reboot without those guys, or those writers," Thomas said. "That's the strongest bit of branding in there – the personalities of the writers and the actors. Without that, it's just a TV show about some humans in a flat. That's not really a hook!"

James Buckley – foul-mouthed Jay – had his say too, commenting that he didn't believe an Inbetweeners reboot would ever really see the light of day.

"I'm really proud of The Inbetweeners and we worked really hard on it," Buckley said. "We cared about it and worried about it, and really wanted it to the best that we could make it.

"If some other sitcom turns up, it might be called The Inbetweeners, but it just wouldn't be. It sounds like a disaster.

"I can't imagine that it would ever actually happen. I can't imagine people liking it, at all, whatsoever. New writers, especially. It just wouldn't be The Inbetweeners, and then I'd worry about being associated with it. Because we worked so hard to try and do our best.

"It seems like a bizarre idea. I don't know who wants that. I don't know who on Earth would want it."

Clear? Literally no-one thinks this is a good idea. So drop it, you bunch of briefcase wankers!

If you want something that'll capture a little of the spirit of the original Inbetweeners, Thomas and Buckley have reunited for a new series – White Gold, written by Beesley.

The series, starring the pair as two hapless double-glazing salesmen working with Ed Westwick's suave boss Vincent, begins Wednesday, May 24 at 10pm on BBC Two.
