It was called the most “ill-advised defamation case since Oscar Wilde”, and now viewers will finally get the inside scoop on the Wagatha Christie case in a new Channel 4 dramatisation of the events, featuring the legendary Michael Sheen.

For those who, for whatever reason, didn’t follow every single second of the excruciatingly addictive court case back in May of this year: after Coleen Rooney (wife of former footballer Wayne) publicly accused Rebekah Vardy (wife of Leicester striker Jamie) of leaking information contained within her private Instagram stories to the press, Rebekah Vardy made the decision to sue Rooney for defamation.

In what will go down as some of the greatest court transcripts to date – Vardy’s agent accidentally “dropping” her phone full of evidence in the North Sea being a particular highlight - it came as no surprise that Vardy lost the case, leaving her to pick up the multi-million pound legal fees. Defiant until the very end, Vardy said the judge had “got it wrong” after her ruling. Even Jesse Armstrong couldn’t script this gold.

Unsurprisingly, there were several production companies keen to snap up this story and retell it for the nation. First past the post is Channel 4’s two-part film, Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama, due to air later this year.

In one corner, we have the BAFTA-winning actor Chanel Cresswell (who has previously appeared in This is England, Trolled) taking on the role of Coleen Rooney, while Natalia Tena (Harry Potter, Game of Thrones) will be Rebekah Vardy, ill-advisedly fighting for her reputation in what ended up as very much an own goal.

Adding a bit of gravitas to proceedings is Michael Sheen, last seen in Good Omens and Quiz, as Coleen Rooney’s high profile barrister David Sherborne. His opposition, Simon Coury (The Professor and the Madman) will play Rebekah’s barrister, Hugh Tomlinson QC (now KC).

As for who’s playing the footballers forced to watch their wives’ trial proceedings through their fingers, Wayne Rooney will be portrayed by Dion Lloyd and Jamie Vardy will be Márton Nagyszokolyai.

According to the synopsis, the two-parter has been “created from the real court transcripts” and will build on the “high drama and high stakes” of a case “that had a huge impact on the lives of the two women at its heart, and catapulted the two sparring legal teams into the spotlight.”

Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama will air on Channel 4 later on this year.
