Looking for another dark murder mystery set in a claustrophobic military setting? Well, you’re in luck, as the BBC have announced that Vigil will be returning shortly for its second series.

Starring Suranne Jones as the no-bullshit DCI Amy Silva, the first series of Tom Edge's 2021 Emmy-award winning show was a hit with audiences, as more than 10 million people tuned in for the first episode.

Viewers watched as Silva – who, of course, is a TV detective also fighting her own personal demons – was tasked with unveiling the murderer on board a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine called Vigil (similar to the real-life Trident). As the series went on, it was revealed to be part of a much bigger cover-up that involved the Royal Navy, MI5 and Russian spies as it became a deeper-reaching political maelstrom.

What’s the big idea for season 2?

Sadly, it doesn’t look like the action will be taking place inside of the pressure-cooker of a nuclear-warhead carrying submarine; instead it will be set inside a military base. However, expect more death-defying stunts and potentially enclosed spaces – the planes, perhaps? – as the action takes flight in the air.

According to the official synopsis of the six-parter: “Following multiple unexplained fatalities at a Scottish military facility, Silva and Longacre are tasked with uncovering the cause. Entering the hostile and closed ranks of the air force, the pair must face the deadly warfare of tomorrow as they fight for their own future.”

Who will be starring in it?

Jones is back as Silva, while her love interest and work partner Detective Sergeant Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) will once again be returning to their roles, as will Gary Lewis as Detective Superintendent Colin Robertson. The big news for series two is that it will star Dougray Scott (probably hoping he won’t be killed off in the first episode, like Martin Compson’s character’s fate in S1) and Romola Garai.

Garai hinted at the new twists and turns of this outing of the programme and said: “It’s a huge privilege to be welcomed in as a part of Vigil series two and to be playing such a layered, complex character. I can only hope to do justice to the shows continued fascinating, challenging and thrilling storytelling.”

Also coming on board are Amir El-Masry (SAS Rogue Heroes, Limbo), David Elliot (The Liberator, Bulletproof), Chris Jenks (Sex Education, Karen Pirie), Tommy Sim’aan (The Midwich Cuckoos, Doctors), Oscar Salem (House of the Dragon, Des), Jonathan Ajayi (Noughts + Crosses) and Hiba Medina.

Is there a trailer?

Not just yet, but we’ll update you when there is.

When will it air?

It’s currently filming in Scotland and Morocco, so we’d say not to expect it before 2024. Again, we’ll keep you posted on when to tune in.
