New year, new you, right? Wrong. You'll need years of therapy to unpack the year that was 2022, and that's a pricey proposition. Much better to watch a show about therapists, and hope that some wisdom rubs off on you. Well guess what? We've got just the show in mind.

Starring the unlikely combo of Harrison Ford (in one of his first major TV roles) and funnyman Jason Segel, new 10-part series Shrinking has just arrived on Apple TV+. It's written by the folks behind Ted Lasso, Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein, alongside Segel, and it's up there with the most anticipated shows of 2023.

What’s the big idea?

The series follows a grieving therapist, Jimmy Johns, (played by Segel) who goes rogue, starts to break the rules and tells his clients exactly what he thinks. The synopsis reads: “Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives…including his own.” Sounds like Liar Liar, but set in a therapist’s office.

Shrinking will also see a strong supporting cast of characters who all need a little life guidance, played by the likes of Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Michael Urie, Luke Tennie and Lukita Maxwell.

How to watch Shrinking for free

The first two episodes will stream on Apple TV+ from 27 January, then each remaining episode will air weekly until the finale.

The last episode streams on 24 March, so if you can hold out until then, Apple TV+ are still running their seven-day free trial to the service, so there’s a whole week to binge the entire season. Alternatively, you can use the free trial to see if it's your cup of tea before you commit.

But if you’re due for an upgrade on an iPhone or any other Apple device – or have bought one in the last 90 days – you’ll get free Apple TV+ for three months, so if you can wait to buy or upgrade until 27 December, this should take you up to the finale. And in the meantime, you can get stuck into other new Apple TV+ shows and films like Slow Horses s2, Shantaram or The Greatest Beer Run Ever.

Shrinking streams on Apple TV+ from January 27.
