By Tom Hardy's Venom made an absolute shedload of money back in 2018 and enjoyed an extremely long tail to its box office takings, so it was absolutely no surprise when a sequel was announced last year.
A since-deleted post on Hardy's Instagram feed suggested that filming wrapped in early February. But what else do we know?
Who's in it?
Hardy will return as Eddie Brock, obviously, and after being introduced in a mid-credits scene in Venom Woody Harrelson's Cletus Kasady – alias Carnage – will make his debut proper as the Big Bad Brock will have to deal with. Michelle Williams will be back too, and Variety reported in October last year that Naomie Harris is expected to play another villain, Shriek. Deadline added in December that Stephen Graham will be involved too.
What about behind the camera?
Andy Serkis, of Lord of the Rings, Planet of the Apes and Black Panther, is on directing duties. This will be his third feature as the main man, following Breathe and Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, plus some second unit directing on Peter Jackson's The Hobbit films.
What can we expect from the story?
Apart from Carnage being the main evildoer, it's all a bit vague. Rumours suggest we might meet Kasady when he's about to be put to death by the state in California, and that he'll make a break for it with
Can we see any pics from the set yet?
Boy howdy you can. Tom Hardy's just put up a slew of images from behind the scenes, and it looks like he's back in his biking leathers.
Plus, photographer Greg Williams has added a few too – and his include a quick peek at Harrelson's floppy haircut.
Has anyone said anything about it yet?
It's all a bit quiet there at the minute, sadly. Serkis did speak about Venom 2 a little at the Baftas in early February, but gave very little away.
"Well, you know, I really can’t talk too much about it – I know, boring – but we’re 40 days into the shoot and it’s really thrilling," he told Digital Spy. "We’ve got the magnificent Tom Hardy, who’s obviously at the centre of it, and we sort of see a deepening of the relationship between him, and obviously there’s a nemesis character and… that’s all I can say."
Will Spider-Man turn up?
Now, this is a tricky one. The ongoing palaver of Sony and Marvel's negotiations over who has custody of Peter Parker at weekends hasn't thrown up any solid conclusions as yet, but we do know from the Morbius trailer that Venom is considered to be within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So that's something, at least.
Is Eminem doing the theme song again?
VENOMMMMM VENOMMMMMMM VENOMMMMMMM VENOMMMMMMM. It seems doubtful, even if it was a blast from the past to witness a comic book film with an actual theme song over the credits. Very Wild Wild West.
When is it out?
Venom 2 is scheduled for release on 2 October 2020 in America, but we've not yet had any word on when the UK release will be.
