It doesn’t feel like the worst time to be announcing a car that looks tailored for the post-apocalypse and that’s exactly what forward-thinking American carmaker Fisker has done with the Force E package of its Ocean electric SUV.
It’s calling the Ocean “the world’s greenest car”, which is of course easier to say than to demonstrate given it isn’t coming out until 2022, but the all-electric, zero emissions SUV does have a neat USP sleeve – rooftop solar panels. The vegan interior is almost a given these days in the field of premium EVs.
While the base model is a slick looking urban all-rounder, with quoted 300 mile range and starting at just $40,000, the Force E version announced last week is one of four variations and features a raft of special outdoor features.
Those all-terrain tyres are a handy clue that it’s an off-roader for starters, and the spare tyre mount on the bonnet makes for a clear statement about what this car is for, and a nice nod to early Land Rovers.
A heavy-duty suspension, tow hooks, tool mounts and extra lighting are amongst the other utilitarian features announced so far; a removable roof panel allows for a DIY conversion to open air driving.
Surely the best feature for anyone looking for a post-apocalyptic set of wheels? A tap next to the license plate for clean drinking water wherever you might be heading.
It’s due in 2022 which at least gives you some time to accrue enough tinned goods and water-purifying tablets to pile in the back. Or, preferably, take it camping.
With 300hp and more torque than the standard model, the Force E will inevitably be compared to Elon Musk's Tesla Cybertruck which will arrive on the roads – or off them – at around the same time.
