Jaguar has launched the new version of its much-loved F-Type sports car and the changes will likely be seen as reassuringly subtle for fans of the original, which won a host of awards in its time, including World Car Design of the Year. It became something of a 21st century classic, and we all know that you mess with a classic at your peril.

Having launched in 2013, it's a big compliment to the outgoing F-Type that it doesn't seem or look six years old. But perhaps taking inspiration from the way Porsche has subtly evolved the 911 over five decades, Jaguar clearly felt it was time for a freshen up.

Reworked slim LED headlights, enhanced rear haunches and a new clamshell bonnet, which accentuates the car's width, are among the biggest tweaks, while a new front bumper and slightly bigger grille are aimed at delivering a more aggressive stance.

The phrase 'evolution not revolution' is well-worn amongst car designers and it's certainly true here. But the overall result already looks simple, natural and obvious, as the best design always does.

“Design the most beautiful sports car, with purity, proportion and presence that’s unmistakably Jaguar: that was the challenge we set ourselves," said new design boss Julian Thomson. His predecessor, Ian Callum, who retired in the summer after 20 years, has previously described launching the original F-Type coupé as his proudest moment.

Jaguar will also be going toe-to-toe with Porsche for customers as this will be a direct rival in the 911 market. The F-Type will have the advantage of offering more options for buyers from the entry-level 2-litre, 4-cylinder model, to the flagship F-Type R, a 575hp V8 capable of 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds.

The new Jaguar F-Type is costs from £54,060 and is available to order now at jaguar.co.uk
