The man who bought you The Wire will focus on the Spanish Civil War in a new series currently in early development.

David Simon, the cult classic creator who has more recently worked on HBO's acclaimed series The Deuce, is in talks with Spanish production company Mediapro (The Young Pope) to develop the series titled A Dry Run, which will focus on the Abraham Lincoln Battalion coming from the U.S. to Spain during the Civil War.

Variety reports that, 'A Dry Run will follow the Abraham Lincoln and George Washington Battalions, both part of the International Brigade that fought in the Spanish Civil War, from their arrival in 1937 and first bloody battle in the Jarama Valley until their departure in 1939."

Scriptwriters George Pelecanos and Dennis Lehane, who both worked on the Baltimore narcotics drama, have outlined the scripts for A Dry Run and committed to work on the project.

Speaking of the project, which is currently imagined as a six-hour miniseries, Mediapro founder Jaume Roures said that, “We are interested in realism. And we don’t sell much in the way of redemption or happy endings. And, well, 1939 was no happy ending. Nor was it redemptive.” Adding that The Spanish Civil War was “a dry run for the maelstrom to come.”

The project is currently seeking funding, and sounds like the bloody treacherous drama you'll need to fill that Game of Thrones-shaped hole in your life after next year.
