Jarring realisations that things in real life are getting a bit like Black Mirror is just a condition of being able to function day-to-day, but for Domhnall Gleeson, one stage direction in a Black Mirror script was enough to make him reevaluate his relationship with tech.

Gleeson told Vulture that his appearance as a dead boyfriend brought back to life as an artificially intelligent droid using his social media posts in the episode 'Be Right Back' in the second series of Charlie Brooker's dystopian series was, surprisingly enough, a bit of a wake-up call.

"There’s one moment where my character’s desperately searching for his phone. He just stands in the hallway and looks around blankly. I forget what the stage direction was, but it was really good," he said.

"That’s when I realised I had done the same thing so many times, looking for my phone and feeling lost without it. So, yeah, I’ve tried to use my phone less since then. Sometimes, I fail. But at least I’m mindful of it."

It's good to know that there is a simple solution to being hooked on your phone: just become one of the most in-demand actors in television thanks to being cast in Black Mirror as a horrifying portent of the technological whirlpool which humanity finds itself being pulled into. Easy.
