The gang are hitting adolescence and as Mike points out in the trailer, nobody's that into the idea of sitting around in his basement playing Dungeons & Dragons anymore. Eleven and Max from the last season are discovering the joys of knocking about at the mall and listening to records, because the thrills of running around fighting demons aren't really anyone's idea of a fun summer holiday.

So, it looks like a season of changes - not least in a neon-hued, Black Mirror's 'San Junipero'-esque aesthetic and an emphasis on gags after the darker, grief-stricken second season.

However! There is, as ever, something strange in the neighbourhood. Hordes of rats, mainly, plus a man with a gun snooping around a funfair hall of mirrors, an electrical explosion taking out people in hazmat suits and what looks like a return to The Void for Eleven.

There are pointers toward plot points that loop back round to long-running arcs too. That thing at the end looks a lot like an evolved form of the Demogorgon from season one - as well as looking like the actual The Thing - and, perhaps most crucially, there's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it kiss between Eleven and Mike.

There's a couple of 70s nods in there too - the remix of 'Baba O'Riley', obviously, but focusing the action around a mayor who's bang into celebrating the fourth of July might well be a Jaws reference. Overall though: looks like a massive laugh.
