When it comes to titles, Avengers: Endgame doesn't give a whole lot away. Unlike many of its Marvel Cinematic Universe predecessors, there are no obvious links to major comic book storylines, and it's more generically ominous than anything else.

One thing we know is that the term has been used a handful of times in the MCU's past. Once in Avengers: Infinity War, where Doctor Strange indicates that it might be part of his master plan to defeat Thanos.

And it also cropped up way back in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, in a conversation that reddit user u/dafsjgf theorises might foreshadow the death of two major team members.

After Ultron has battled the Avengers and escaped, Iron Man describes the threat they faced in the previous Avengers film as the "endgame" (ie the invasion of New York, so essentially Thanos again).

"How were you guys planning on beating that?" he continues, to which Captain America responds, "Together."

When Tony Stark adds that, "We'll lose," Steve Rogers says, "Then we'll do that together, too."

The theory is that this hints that Cap and Iron Man will die together in Endgame. The film is fully expected to finally reunite the frenemies (after Infinity War failed to do so), and as Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr's characters are the ones most speculated to die/depart the MCU, it's certainly well within the bounds of possibility. Could their reunion be tied up in a double-whammy noble sacrifice to defeat Thanos/restore the universe to its pre-Snap condition?

More than any other MCU film, Age of Ultron was accused of spending too much time setting up future events, including Thor's vision and the introduction of plot points that wouldn't pay off until Black Panther. Could this bit of dialogue be another case of foreshadowing years in advance?

Or are we just reading too much into things? And can you really blame us for that?
