Fans flock to Comic-Con in the hope of getting first glimpses of all sorts of top-secret films from the likes of Marvel and DC, but they really hit the jackpot this weekend in San Diego.

On Saturday evening, as part of the Marvel panel the teaser trailer for Black Panther 2, aka Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, was finally released, and to say it looks epic is an understatement.

The trailer takes us back to the universe of Wakanda – last seen in 2018’s blockbuster by Ryan Coogler – and there’s sweeping cinemascapes of death, birth and battles all crammed into just 120 seconds.

The white-gowned tribe appear to be in mourning or at a funeral procession, no doubt a tribute to the original Black Panther / T’Challa, and the actor Chadwick Boseman, who died aged 43 in 2020. Ramonda (Angela Bassett) roars out: “I am queen of the most powerful nation in the world, and my entire family is gone, have I not given everything?”, while there’s a snapshot of a pregnant woman, which viewers are speculating could be Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o).

Meanwhile, we’ve got warriors riding on whales, fire-on-water backdrops and glimpses of the rest of the cast; Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Michaela Coel, Winston Duke and Martin Freeman, all soundtracked by an African choir singing Bob Marley, which morphs into Kendrick Lamar’s Alright. It’s fair to say that emotions were probably running high in Comic-Con’s Hall H when the trailer was screened.

Speaking at the conference, Coogler said: “It’s going to be hard to follow [the first film] up, but we’ll try. It’s been five years since I was here. I sat about there and we premiered the first footage from Black Panther and sitting next to me was our T’Challa, the late great Chadwick Boseman.” He added that the new film “goes to new places in Wakanda that we haven’t seen before and it goes to new places in the Marvel Cinematic Universe”.

But the big question remains: who is Black Panther? We get a glimpse of the black suit, but not who’s in it in the final scene of the trailer. As the president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, said previously the role would not be recast, as Boseman’s portrayal was “iconic and transcends any iteration of the character in any other medium from Marvel’s past”.

The trailer had 17 million views within 24 hours of its release and it has really hit the fans in the feels. “This trailer has to be one the most emotional things I’ve seen in a MCU trailer,” commented one person on YouTube. Another fan added: “Chills from start to finish,” while someone else summed up: “Goosebumps. Tears. No words. RIP to the king.”

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is released on November 11.
