The Dark Night director Christopher Nolan has cast breakout BlacKkKlansman star John David Washington in a leading role for his next movie.

The actor made a name for himself on HBO series Ballers alongside Dwayne Johnson, but he truly stepped into the spotlight with his role in Spike Lee's Oscar-winning BlacKkKlansman.

Nolan's new film, which he's written and will direct, is currently without a title and set for release on July 17, 2020. Apart from Washington's casting and the project being described as an "event film", there are no other details about it just yet.

Washington won plaudits for his portrayal of Ron Stallworth, the real-life police officer who managed to infiltrate the ranks of the Klu Klux Klan in Colorado Springs in the late 1970s.

Washington's father (you know Denzel Washington, right?) described himself as a "proud papa" after his son's leading role in BlacKkKlansman.

"I knew my son was going to be a good actor, he is one," Denzel told The Telegraph.

"He's growing as an actor, it's something he really wanted. And I'm his dad, I'm a proud papa, I'm so happy for him.

"We were watching him last night do one of the big talk shows in America and it's like slapping my wife [high] five, we were sitting there just... it's unbelievable."

BlacKkKlansman got nominated in six categories at the 2019 Academy Awards, scooping the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
