Luka Modrić broke the decade of dominance which the Messi-Ronaldo axis had held over world football's big individual awards last night, and while the two big dogs apparently expected a coronation for Modrić - neither Messi nor Ronaldo turned up - the voting shows Ronaldo still massively resents Messi's continued brilliance.

As the captains of their nations, both players got to vote for the best men's player gong. Leo did the reasonable thing and voted for Ronaldo (in third, behind Modric in first and rocket-powered child genius Kylian Mbappé), but Ronaldo shunned Messi's 40-goal, 14-assist season in favour of Raphael Varane, Modric and Antoine Griezmann.

It was a good night for tailoring though, as Idris Elba popped on a waistcoat commemorating Gareth Southgate's shriek of joy after England's penalty shootout win over Colombia while he chatted to Southgate onstage. None of Southgate's English World Cup squad made the FIFPro World XI, though Kane did manage to heave his exhausted, quivering frame into the top 10 in the voting for the best men's player award.

Kane got less than one percent of the overall vote - though he was picked by luminaries including Maltese captain Michael Mifsud and national coaches of the Cayman Islands, Guam and Chinese Taipei - and was some distance from Modrić. Kane picked Cristiano Ronaldo, Leo Messi and Kevin De Bruyne in that order, while Southgate chose Luka Modrić, Raphael Varane and Eden Hazard.
