The director behind recent Oscar hits La La Land and Whiplash is teaming up with Apple for his latest project, a television series.

The news confirms that tech giants and streaming services are beginning to compete with major studios in the award stakes, as this week Netflix's film Mudbound earned an impressive eight Oscar nominations.

Chazelle is already working on a film with Universal called First Man. Ryan Gosling is on board to play history's most famous astronaut in the story of NASA's mission to land a man on the moon, covering Neil Armstrong's life between 1961 and 1969. Claire Foy is also on board to appear in the feature.

Clearly not afraid of commitment, Chazelle is also attached to Netflix’s new musical drama, The Eddy, which he will produce and direct multiple episodes of.

But it is this new Apple series which seems to be his baby, with him writing and directing every episode of the forthcoming series, with his La La Land producing partner Jordan Horowitz on board.

Though details are extremely sparse at the moment, the series joins a roster of talent-heavy projects coming from Apple, including a comedy series starring Kristen Wiig and executive produced by Reese Witherspoon, and a morning show-themed drama starring Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston.
