If you're the kind of guy who would rather spend a winter's evening dodging traffic on the A3 than be caught in some sort of novelty festive item of clothing, then allow David Beckham to be your understated inspiration when it comes to low-key Christmas style.

On his way to a nice party in London with his wife Victoria at the weekend, Beckham was papped in an outfit that featured all the classic hallmarks of post-retirement, menswear Becks, including a double-breasted camel coat, roll neck and black derbies in high-shine leather, with one notable exception... around the ankle.

Right here!

A man who, asides from his ever-changing array of hairstyles, enjoys a smart and consistent relationship with his 40+ wardrobe (the sarong days far behind him), Beckham employed a new (for him) and youthful tactic that has been growing in popularity over the last year: the cropped trouser with statement sock look.

An ideal way to introduce some pop into an otherwise straight-forward (but stylish) outfit, Beckham's choice of wide crop trousers with red socks is daring, and festive enough, without veering into novelty territory.

Because, as you know, clothes shouldn't be "funny".

If you're looking to make your socks more of a shareholder in the wider business of your outfits, then your first step is to be like Becks and buy a pair of trousers that finish a couple of inches above the ankle in either a tapered or wide cut, before adding a pair of socks that create contrast without being too attention grabby (avoid anything with multiple patterns if you can).

Lounge lizard/Michael Jackson style is back on the menu, boys!
