It's been eight long years since the last Call of Duty: Modern Warfare game, but following a leak and some extremely basic YouTube sleuthing, it sounds like we're in for a fourth instalment in the extremely addictive series - generally considered the best of them all - very, very soon.

Basically, Jacques Patrick (running back, Florida State) and Riley Ridley (wide receiver, University of Georgia) are American footballers (bit like rugby, more armour and nachos) and gaming fans who got to have a go on a game at a private Call of Duty event in Nashville over the weekend, and footage (moving images, recorded on a phone) of them doing that popped up on YouTube (video-sharing platform).

Happily, some super-fan of either American football or bipping 13-year-olds in the head with a sniper rifle has taken the liberty of slowing down some footage which leaked on Instagram so we can properly hear what these two enormous men appear to be saying.

It does sound a bit like someone in the room is saying "kill streaks" and "Modern Warfare 4", though the second one could easily be "I buried Paul". If we're taking this at face value - and why on earth wouldn't you take a 22-second video of some slurred speech at face value - we can suss a few things out.

Chiefly, it means that the next CoD game won't be a sequel to 2013's Ghosts, but a return to its most celebrated thread of the franchise. There have been a few pointers in this direction before now, most notably basketballer James Harding wearing a Modern Warfare 4-branded hat while doing some commentary on TV and a LinkedIn listing which seemed to show developers shifting to Infinity Ward, the studio which sorts out the CoD series.

We can also deduce that the game's very, very, very near to being ready for general consumption and is likely to get a proper announcement in the coming weeks. Between this and the upcoming Halo Infinite, it's a good time to be a fan of rampaging explode-'em-ups.
